Why Band Selection Matters
Choosing the right pull-up assistance band is more important than most people think. Pick a band with too much assistance and you’ll breeze through reps without building real strength — your muscles never learn to do the work on their own. Pick one with too little assistance and you’ll struggle to complete even a single rep, leading to frustration and poor form that can cause injury.
The goal is to find a band that lets you complete 6-10 quality reps with proper form. You should feel the effort on every rep, but still be able to maintain a full range of motion — chin over the bar, arms fully extended at the bottom.
The 5 Resistance Levels
Iron Core Athletics bands come in 5 color-coded resistance levels. All bands are 41 inches long, made from 100% natural latex, and stretch to over 2x their original length.
-
Orange #1 (1/4” wide) — 5-15 lbs of assistance. The lightest band, ideal for warm-ups, rehab exercises, light stretching, and yoga. For pull-ups, this is a finishing band for athletes who are close to unassisted reps.
-
Red #2 (1/2” wide) — 10-35 lbs of assistance. A versatile mid-light band for pull-up assistance, general strength training, and Pilates. Great for lighter individuals or those with a solid baseline of upper body strength.
-
Black #3 (3/4” wide) — 30-50 lbs of assistance. The most popular band for assisted pull-ups. Medium resistance that suits a wide range of body weights and fitness levels. Also excellent for powerlifting warm-ups and mobility work.
-
Purple #4 (1 1/8” wide) — 40-80 lbs of assistance. Heavy resistance for larger athletes who need significant help on pull-ups, or for anyone doing heavy resistance training like banded squats and deadlifts.
-
Green #5 (1 3/4” wide) — 50-120 lbs of assistance. Maximum resistance for the heaviest assistance needs. Ideal for heavier athletes just starting their pull-up journey or for advanced heavy resistance exercises.
Body Weight Guidelines
Your body weight is the best starting point for selecting a band. Here’s a general framework:
-
Under 100 lbs: Start with Orange #1 (5-15 lbs). Most lighter individuals already have a favorable strength-to-weight ratio, so a light band provides just enough help.
-
100-150 lbs: Try Red #2 (10-35 lbs) or Black #3 (30-50 lbs) depending on your current pull-up ability. If you can already do 1-3 unassisted pull-ups, go with Red. If you can’t do any yet, start with Black.
-
150-200 lbs: Black #3 (30-50 lbs) or Purple #4 (40-80 lbs). Black is the sweet spot for most people in this range. Purple if you’re on the heavier end or new to upper body training.
-
200-250 lbs: Purple #4 (40-80 lbs). The extra width and resistance give you meaningful assistance without doing all the work for you.
-
250+ lbs: Green #5 (50-120 lbs). Maximum assistance to get you started. No shame in starting here — building your first pull-up at 250+ lbs is a serious athletic achievement.
Combining Bands for Custom Resistance
One of the best features of loop bands is that you can stack them together. Loop two bands over the bar and step into both to combine their resistance. For example:
- Red #2 + Orange #1 = approximately 15-50 lbs of assistance
- Black #3 + Red #2 = approximately 40-85 lbs of assistance
This lets you dial in the exact resistance you need and make smaller jumps as you progress.
The Progression Path
The real power of resistance bands is the progression system. Here’s how it works:
- Start with the band that lets you do 6-10 clean reps
- Train consistently until you can do 3 sets of 10 with good form
- Drop down to a lighter band and repeat the process
- Continue until you’re doing pull-ups with just the Orange #1 — or no band at all
This progression might take weeks or months depending on where you start. That’s perfectly normal. The important thing is consistent training with proper form.
Our Recommendation
If you’re serious about building pull-up strength, the Complete Set of 5 is the best investment. At $29.95, you get every resistance level, which means you always have the right band for your current ability and a clear path forward as you get stronger. You can also combine bands for fine-tuned resistance at any stage.
Standard vs Premium
All of the above applies to both our Standard and Premium lines. The Standard line delivers proven, reliable performance at a great value. Our Premium Never Break line adds anti-slip texture, comfort edges, non-whitening material, and is tested over 30,000 pull cycles. If you train daily or outfit a commercial gym, Premium is worth the upgrade. For most home gym users, Standard is an excellent choice.
